NC Housing Search internet database

Good Morning,

At a recent meeting with the NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services housing coordination staff I was introduced to the "free service for finding and listing affordable housing" NCHousingSearch.org.

The search tools include location (county or city levels) and rent. You can see what the properties offer in amenities, pet-friendliness, access to services and affordability. One cool feature is the map showing where the properties are located. Google maps scores again!

The site lists rent-supported facilities across the state.

Try it out & send feedback about how it works for you.

Good Morning,

The US Department of Health and Human Services Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services homeless initiative.

Homelessness is a significant and growing problem in the United States. A recent study estimates that over 700,000 people are homeless on any given night and up to 2 million people experience homelessness during a year. Through nearly two decades of work with families and individuals who are homeless, we have learned that effective services are available and that persons who are homeless will use those services. Nearly every one of these services can be supported by traditional mainstream insurance, entitlement, and assistance programs funded by Federal agencies.

In March 2003, Secretary Tommy G. Thompson released HHS' plan to end chronic homelessness. The plan supports the commitment of President Bush to end chronic homelessness in a decade. HHS administers health and social service programs that make critical contributions toward fulfilling this commitment. Lee Street Recovery

Good Morning,

I got a postcard advertising Lee Street Recovery & wanted to share it with everyone working with women in recovery from substance abuse problems.

This is a private pay residential facility with a 12 to 24 month program.

The website is pretty & well-done. can't speak for their program.

Serenity Farm Halfway House Renovations in the News

Good Morning,

Just want to post quickly notice that the Serenity Farm Halfway House for Men program is in the news. A nice article in Boone's High Country Press,May 24, 2007 issue, presents a little history, a program overview, and a discussion of our renovation need.
Addiction Recovery Center Faces Closure: Serenity Farm Needs $20,000 for Smoke Alarms Story by Bernadette Cahill.

From the outside, the red hut on U.S. Highway 221 looks like any gardener’s tool shed, but inside, like Dr. Who’s Tardis, it’s a different world. It positively
vibrates.

Only a select few ever enter. There, on sobriety day, new graduates of Serenity Farm get some solitude, an opportunity to reflect on their escape from drugs or alcohol and the chance to record their thoughts on the walls.

Workforce Housing notes

Good Morning,

Here is some information from the Center for Housing Policy. The Center's mission as presented on their website:

The Center for Housing Policy is the research affiliate of the National Housing Conference (NHC). In partnership with NHC and its members, the Center works to broaden understanding of the Nation’s housing challenges and to examine the impact of policies and programs developed to address these needs.

Combining research and practical, real-world expertise, the Center helps to develop effective policy solutions at the national, state and local levels that increase the availability of affordable homes.

Shared Equity, Powerful Results:
is an article on one way that local governments can make workforce housing affordable by sharing in the equity. In this way homeowners can cash out equity & upgrade their housing & the local government can keep affordable housing stock for the next users.

Current Housing Availablity

Good Morning,

for a while now I've noticed that there are very few visits to this site. So, I've stopped committing to any regular posting. Its sad, as I really wanted to make this a venue to keep people informed & develop the skills necesary to make it useful & interesting. Well, other things all for my time anyway.

I have had some problems with circulating housing openings & will only be posting them on this blog in the future.

Here are some current housing opportunities:

  • Avery County Group Home, an adult DD Supervised Living facility has two openings. The current four residents are medium to high functioning.
  • OmniVisions
program is for Adult MR/DD consumers. The AFL openings that I have are as following:
    1. One AFL home in Wilkes County
    2. Three AFL homes in Ashe County (West Jefferson)
    3. One AFL home in Catawba County (Conover)
    4. One AFL home in Cabarrus County (Concord)
    5. One AFL home in Mecklenberg County (Moorseville)
  • I have a 3-page listing of DDA/ICF homes across NC from ARC/NC
  • Also have quite a few options for supported housing operated by MHA/NC
  • At this time ComServ, Inc. has two ICF/MR vacancies. We have one children's home vacancy and one possible adult home vacancy.
So, send an email if any of these interest you. Or click on the links to generate a direct email about a referral. Let them know where you got the lead.

Housing Support Teams

Good Morning,

The NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services put out an RFA for the Homeless Mental Health Housing Initiative. In preparing to write a, hopefully, successful proposal I am doing a little research on what models exist.

  • East Lindsey District Council "Housing Support Team's aim is to empower people by offering support, advice and guidance to manage their housing related issues and also to realise and achieve their personal goals.

The Housing Support Team work in imaginative ways to address the effects of homelessness and poor housing on individuals or families. Homelessness can be caused by lack of affordable housing or by people's difficulty in making and keeping a home."
  • The Alleghany County "Housing as Home" plan. Not clear on where this group is located.
